Great blog! Both Jacob & Cliff are committed to no flights in US. They take the train cross country. Jacob moved back to RI from CA for mostly that reason- close to home, beautiful New England, less carbon emissions. No car, he bikes everywhere & public transport. I’ve reduced my travel to one trip a year. Agree we can all do better & awareness is first step. Miss you two in RI but glad you’re close to family west coast!
Ouch! I’m not doing well transportation-wise. But my solo trips to Seattle are on the train. 😀Our two-person trips to same are via ICE auto. ☹️ Several cross-country flights a year for family. 😳
However, We did raise 3 girls; they all have EVs. 😀
Two good points! I probably shouldn't have devoted a ClimateDog issue to train travel as a useful environmental action. Especially after, as I was writing it, its impossibility for most families dawned on me.
Hope you and Hilary had a good time at the Harvard reunion! Unfortunately, trains are only practical for most US travelers in the Washington to Boston Amtrak corridor, and possibly between LA and San Francisco. All of us should travel across the country in a train at least once in a lifetime--I have--but I wonder what the per capital carbon release if the train is only 20-25% full.
Yes, a high-mileage car is great, but it has dangers. When Hilary chose our Honda Civic Hybrid in 2002, we found we did 50+ mpg. We rejoiced, congratulated ourselves, started bragging . . . and promptly doubled the number of miles we drove that next year!
Thank you! Good info when making travel decisions. Generally we are not flying. Taking train when we can. Hybrid car is helpful, and only one car for our family of two!
